Species & Climate Change Models

This project builds off of species models developed in a previous Conservation International project called Spatial Planning for Conservation in Response to Climate Change, or SPARC. SPARC gave us global models of change-driven shifts for over 17,000 species of amphibians, birds, mammals, and reptiles. SPARCLE takes these models to demonstrate land use plans that

  • Prioritize where conservation will remain effective as the climate changes

  • Integrate Natural Climate Solutions to mitigate carbon emissions

  • Avoid placing infrastructure where it may conflict with future species movement or ecological value

  • Ultimately, our work aims to make land use tradeoffs visible and navigable for long-term planning.
